A monthly happening

The History

Founded in 2014 by Miranda McPherson and Richard Burton, Birmingham Art Crawl was built on the premise of providing regular community art events, securing profitable and unique opportunities for artists and makers, and by providing opportunities for individual community members and businesses to engage with and support the arts in Birmingham.

Schedule of happenings

First Thursdays

Each month, BAC provides artists with a physical space for displaying and selling their work in downtown Birmingham. In addition to providing the opportunity for artists and artisans to exercise their talent and generate income, the expectation is that the community will benefit from Birmingham Art Crawl in the following ways: generate tourism, increase Birmingham’s collective identity, improve community image and status, promote diversity, inclusion, tolerance and free expression, build social capital, and create new business opportunities.

& Makers

We couldn’t be more honored to host some of the most talented, interesting, and innovative artists to come out of the Magic City. Below are just some of the mediums that participate during Birmingham Art Crawl, however we are always up for new means of artistic expression.

“A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, and some fantasy. When you always make your mean perfectly plain you end up boring people.”

- Edgar Degas

“I’m interested in contemporary vision.. the flicker of chrome, reflections, rapid associations, quick flashes of light. Bing-bang! I don’t do anecdotes. I accumulate experiences.”

- James Rosenquist

“The attractions of ceramics lie partly in its contradictions. It is both difficult and easy, with an element beyond our control. It is both extremely fragile and durable. Like ‘Sumi’ ink painting, it does not lend itself to erasures and indecision.”

- Isamu Noguchi

graphic design

“I’ve always thought that there shouldn’t be any limit to the things that are well designed. And I think that people who consider that art should only be kept for art galleries and doesn’t have a role in public life, I think that’s too narrow.”

- Ken Done

"The act of printing has always seemed to me a miracle, just such a miracle as the growing up of a tiny seed of grain to an ear - an everyday miracle, even the greater because it happens everyday. One drawing is sown on the stone or the etching plate, and a harvest is reaped from it."

- from Van Gogh's letters

"A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist."

- Louis Nizer

mixed media

“Art is anything you can get away with.”

- Andy Warhol

“Drawing is not an exercise. Exercise is sitting on a stationary bicycle and going nowhere. Drawing is being on a bicycle and taking a journey. For me to succeed in drawing, I must go fast and arrive somewhere. The quest is to keep the thing alive.”

- Jim Dine

The Pizitz Building

In the heart of Birmingham’s theater district, The Pizitz Building was originally designed by Harry B. Wheelock and completed in 1923. The building has since been restored by Bayer Properties into a mixed-used destination including features such as The Pizitz Food Hall, co-working spaces by Forge, Yellowhammer Creative’s retail shop, and the future home of the Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema.

Birmingham Art Crawl is a consistent and guaranteed art show, something like this is hard to come by. After participating in many other art events, just the simple fact that Birmingham Art Crawl is so well run is a beautiful gift that we have learned not to take for granted, but in addition to that, Art Crawl is also consistently working to highlight their artists, affiliated events, bring in new people, and really build the artistic community. Birmingham is full of such amazing people, everyone looks out for each other and that is something we consider to be very special.
